"I understand systems"
Sometimes you get asked what your strengths are and you want a point of difference, a skill that is valuable to business, something that sets you apart of all the other amazing people out there.
Mine is that I can see through systems / processes, I can look at a system in place that isn't working well, instantly see what is challenging and know exactly what needs to be done to "streamline it". It's a great skill to have because businesses find it handy for process mapping, system development, improving results in operations and auditing.
It is also fairly useless on its own.
Just a few of the additional skills needed are: change management to help people see what I see and take it on board. Negotiation skills so that everyone involved gets their point of view expressed and taken into account, project management skills to ensure there is a plan in place and communication skills.
How can you use these skills in your business?
A team has failed an audit or consistently making a series of mistakes. We work on the process to achieve the desired goal, then implement that process to make it happen!
New team requirements are introduced. How are we going to incorporate the new requirements into the current process without upsetting staff who are worried about additional work.
Why are we collecting all this data, what exactly is required, is there double collection occurring and what is the current systems capacity?
There is a risk in the business at the moment because guidelines are not being followed (eg H&S). We work with the staff, putting the system in place and help them do what they need to, to mitigate the risk.
I am not industry specific, systems are not picky and there is no point working in isolation, so we train as we go ensuring that we are leaving skills behind.
